On August 29, I stepped down as President of the New York City Gay Hockey Association. I co-founded this wonderful non-profit organization with Jeff Minck in July 1999 and I watched it blossom into an inclusive and highly-respected staple both at Sky Rink and in the LGBT sports community.
Over the last 17 years, I’ve served with at least a dozen board members who have come and gone, each making their own special contribution. I kept my position as President for as long as I did because this was a labor of love. It was such a pleasure hearing from new members that this was something they never dreamed could exist. In the early years, I’d meet each one personally and help them pick out which skates and equipment to buy (usually going to Gerry Cosby’s at Madison Square Garden). It was important to me that they felt like they were part of the group from the very beginning.
Steven Greenberg has unanimously been elected as the new President of the organization. I can’t think of a more qualified person to step in to fill my skates (yeah, I know…). I trust Steve to continue making us shine both on and off the ice. He has the energy and the drive to keep us going strong for another 17 years!
I will remain on the Board of Directors and continue to help steer the group in the right direction, working with the current Board to keep up the great work they’re doing, managing our Recreational League and our other teams.
The New York City Gay Hockey Association is one of the accomplishments I’m most proud of in my life. Thank you all for being part of it.
